7 Simple Strategies to Stay Motivated in Pursuing Your Goals

‘Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.’ – Thomas A. Edison

t can be challenging to stay motivated when working towards a goal. Whether it’s a professional, personal, or long-term dream, the path to success is rarely a straight line.

One moment, you are energized and determined. Still, sometimes, your motivation disappears, and you’re dragging yourself along, wondering if you’ll ever reach your goal.

But fear not—you are not alone. Staying motivated is a common challenge and the biggest one we face when working to reach our goals.

When we first get an idea, we are excited and motivated to work on it. However, especially if it is a long-term project like writing a book, it is easy to get discouraged once you’ve been at it for a while and that first excitement withers.

Since motivation is influenced by factors like stress, lack of support, and setbacks, it is easy to understand why it dwindles. Thus, knowing how to motivate yourself to keep working towards reaching your goals is crucial.

In this article, we explore practical and actionable strategies for staying motivated. These strategies can fundamentally change how you approach your goals and increase motivation, even when challenges arise and you feel you’ve exhausted your motivational resources.

These 7 strategies will allow you to handle the ups and downs of your journey and ensure you stay on track to achieve your goals. It is helpful in every part of your journey and will help you stay energized and focused while reaching for your dreams.

1. Understand Your Why

Digging deep and determining the deeper reasons behind your goals is crucial, giving you purpose and direction. Once you understand why your goal is vital, pushing through when challenges arise becomes easier. This taps into your inner motivation—your inner drive, not the motivation you get from external rewards or pressures.

If you decide to write a book, your why will keep you going through the months of writing, endless rounds of editing, and the struggle to get your book seen once published.

Your goal can be to sell as many copies as possible as an alternative income stream or a way to encourage and inspire others facing the same challenges you faced and overcame. However, ensuring that your goal aligns with your core values is crucial. Otherwise, this conflict can quickly bring your progress to a grinding halt.

2. Break Down Your Goals

It is better to break your goals into smaller, easier-to-achieve tasks. This will prevent you from getting overwhelmed and help maintain your momentum.

George T. Doran’s SMART system is a valuable tool for setting Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound goals.

So, if you are writing a book, your goals can look like this:

Specific

Complete the first draft of my book by a specific date, e.g., 31 October 2024.

Measurable

Determine how much you must write daily or weekly to achieve your goal. For my book, I’ll take the deadline date, calculate the remaining time, and divide it by the number of chapters I still need to write. Instead of using word count, I’ll measure progress by chapters, as the total word count is not yet determined.

Achievable

Ensure that the daily or weekly chapter goals are realistic and manageable according to your schedule and other commitments.

Relevant

The number of chapters I need to write is directly relevant to the goal of completing my first draft.

Time-bound

I’ve set a deadline and broken down the work into specific chapters to write per day or week, ensuring steady progress toward the goal.

Remember to celebrate the little wins as you hit your mini-goals! It will show that you are progressing and do wonders for your drive to continue! Using the SMART system to set small goals prevents procrastination since you know your mini-goals are achievable, setting you up for success!

3. Develop a Routine

The best way to ensure that you stay on track is to schedule time in your calendar to work on tasks that will help you reach your goals.

The value of routine and habits can’t be underestimated. The specific actions you take daily or weekly reduce the mental effort you need to stay on track and help you build momentum over time. A solid routine keeps you consistent and is crucial to your ongoing progress and motivation.

4. Stay Accountable

Humans are social creatures, and a support network can help keep you motivated and accountable. Since we all care what people think about us, sharing your goals with others is a powerful way to ensure you stick with your routines and habits to accomplish your goals.

When looking for an accountability partner, ensure that the person believes in your goals and dreams and wants you to succeed. Your friends and family may not always understand your writing dreams; thus, joining an online writing group that understands writing challenges and can cheer you on can be beneficial.

5. Overcome Obstacles

You will still experience challenges and setbacks despite all your planning and efforts. Your mindset is crucial in determining how you respond to challenges. You can anticipate them, create a plan to address them and see them as learning opportunities to help you stay resilient.

6. Keep the End in Mind

Regularly visualizing what success will look and feel like is a potent tool for staying motivated. It prepares you mentally and physically to keep up your efforts and fills you with inspiration and hope. Maintaining a long-term vision and reminding yourself of the value and benefits of reaching your goals will help you push through when your motivation is low.

7. Practice Self-Care

Staying motivated and putting in any effort is challenging if you are not mentally, physically, and emotionally healthy. Unlike external factors, you can control your health through regular exercise, a nutritious diet, getting enough sleep, and destressing through mindfulness, time in nature, and creative activities.

In this article, we’ve seen that motivation is the fuel that keeps you moving forward when pursuing any goal.

When you understand your why, break down your goals into manageable steps and develop a consistent routine, you lay a strong foundation for success. Staying accountable, overcoming obstacles with resilience, and keeping your end goal in sight will help you navigate the inevitable challenges.

Equally important is prioritizing self-care, as maintaining your physical and mental well-being is crucial to sustaining long-term motivation.

These seven strategies are more than just tips—they’re transformative practices that can revolutionize your approach to achieving your goals. They have the power to empower you and excite you about the potential of your journey.
