I’m Susan van der Walt, a married woman with a deep love for dogs, who are, in many ways, my children. As an introvert with sensorineural hearing loss, I’ve learned to navigate life through unique challenges and perspectives.
Writing Silent Courage: An Introvert’s Authentic Journey with Hearing Loss was a journey of self-discovery. It took me back to my past, reliving many painful childhood moments, but also allowing me to recognize the strength and resilience I’ve built along the way. From a vulnerable child to the strong woman I am today, I’ve seen how far I’ve come.
I understand what it’s like to live with hearing loss. My research into the science and theory of hearing and hearing loss has deepened my appreciation for my residual hearing—and for the technology that allows me to hear, thanks to advances in digital hearing aids.
As an introvert, I treasure deep connections and quality friendships. These connections are essential, not only for my emotional well-being but also for accommodating and supporting my hearing loss.
My Japanese Chin dog, Sassy, and our new addition, Kanta (a Chinorkie—Japanese Chin/Yorkie mix), bring joy and laughter into my life. Sassy’s funny antics always brighten my mood, and Kanta’s lively spirit adds even more fun to our home.
My faith has carried me through many challenges and remains a source of hope and joy in my life.
Thank you for visiting my website! I’m so glad you’re here. I hope Silent Courage resonates with you and serves as a guide as you navigate your own journey as an introvert living with hearing loss. Together, we can find the strength to weather the storms of life.

Silent Courage is an excellent read. It will help you understand people with hearing loss as well as introverts better. I was hooked from page one. Writers own experiences are also insightful. Estia Riekert.
Nin Mok - Author (Suddenly Silent and Still)
This is by far the most informative book I have ever read. It is well-researched and contains a large number of facts that are not easily accessible, which provides a lot of value to the reader. Like how our brain repurposes areas no longer used to hear (which is scary to me). It was like reading four books in one. Memoir, self-help, informational textbook, some fictional stories at the beginning. At first I had trouble navigating this unique format as I was only used to books that are focused on either one, but in the end came to enjoy the diversity.

I finished your book today! I think it’s very well-written. You also cover a wide range of topics related to hearing loss and being an introvert.

I gave this book 5 stars. I really enjoyed reading it and learned a lot about being an introvert—it truly describes me as well. The book also refreshed my memory about hearing tests and audiograms. I grew up with regular tests, but over time, we forget the details. I especially loved that the author included faith in her story. I, too, love Jesus, and I want to thank her for sharing so honestly.
