The Importance of Listening with Your Heart

One of the most sincere forms of respect is actually listening to what another has to say. – Bryant H. McGill

In Chapter 12, The Art of Listening, I explore the dual role of listening. When we think about listening, we often associate it with the physical act of hearing, but true listening is so much more.

Beyond hearing, listening involves emotional awareness. It’s about reading between the lines and tuning into others’ emotions, which shapes how we interpret their words.

Listening with the heart can be incredibly beneficial but comes with risks. Misreading emotions can lead to misunderstandings, broken trust, and strained relationships. Negative experiences with someone or feelings of threat can cause us to interpret their words inaccurately, attributing intentions that don’t exist.

Listening with the ears is not sufficient for optimal interpretation of conversations. Reading between the lines—tuning in to the speakers’ emotions, intentions, and unspoken messages—often gives us complete comprehension of what we hear.

Our emotions also influence how we interpret what people say to us. If we have a negative experience with a person or feel threatened by them, we will read things in a speaker’s words that are not their intention.

Listening with the heart—tuning into other people’s emotions—stirs feelings of compassion, sympathy, and empathy.”**
