A Sneak Peek: How Hearing Loss Taught Me to Embrace Silence

Silence is a source of great strength. Lao Tzu

There are times when I need to remove my hearing aids—like when bathing, showering, or swimming, as they aren’t waterproof. I also remove them while sleeping since I don’t use permanent hearing aids (I explain the different types of hearing aids in my book Silent Courage: An Introvert’s Authentic Journey with Hearing Loss.) I often feel lonely and disconnected during these moments, enveloped in a silent world.

Though I rely on my hearing aids to live a quality life, there are times when they bring on noise fatigue. Too much noise can be overwhelming, leaving me feeling drained and distant.

Over time, I’ve realized that the solution isn’t always silence. Sometimes, the answer lies in solitude. Unlike social isolation, solitude is a choice—a chance to recharge.

When I seek solitude, I don’t remove my hearing aids. I may still hear some background noise, but I’m not overwhelmed. Instead, I find peace and reconnect with myself. These moments align with my introverted need for quiet moments to rest and replenish my energy.

An introvert’s strength is in embracing solitude. We thrive when we have time alone to process our thoughts, engage in deep reflection, and experience self-awareness. In these moments, introverts unlock creativity, solve problems, and build empathy. – Silent Courage: An Introvert’s Authentic Journey with Hearing Loss

In Chapter 11 of my book Silent Courage: An Introvert’s Authentic Journey with Hearing Loss, I explore the power and benefits of solitude for introverts with hearing loss. This chapter is particularly close to my heart, and I hope it resonates with you as you discover the transformative power of solitude.
