Trusting God Through Life’s Uncertainty

Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? – Matthew 6:26 (NIV)

Reading this verse in my Bible reminded me of the reflection I wrote on my personal blog, and I want to share it with you. Starting a new year often creates a sense of uncertainty.

It feels as if the old year became a comfortable jersey I don’t want to take off. That familiarity creates a sense of calm. Starting a new year is like wearing a new one. It hasn’t contoured to your body yet or proven its worth to keep you warm.

We wonder what the new year will bring and know that it won’t all be good, because such is life.

It is why Matthew 6:26 encourages me. It shows that my Heavenly Father will take care of me just as He cares for the birds.

I’ve recently bought a bird feeder. After finding just the right spot, we added some bread crumbs and waited for the birds to come.

At first, they seemed a bit shy and skittish. They fly away at any sign of movement. But as the days go by, they get used to us. They get comfortable having us around, as long as we don’t come too close.

It is so amazing looking out the window in the morning, seeing the little birds feasting on whatever we provide. Mommies feeding their little ones and seeing how the finch’s darker feathers give way to a fiery red!

It reminds me of Jesus’ words: “Look at the birds…”

We worry about money, health, and relationships. We look at the future and wonder how we will bridge the gap between where we are and where we want to be.

  • Will we have sufficient money to retire?
  • Will we be able to pay for healthcare as we age?
  • Will we be lonely?

Let us take some time each day to sit and watch the little birds. Maybe even snap a photo or two!

Please share your testimony about how trusting God has helped you during challenging times.
