One such option is the Nuance hearing glasses, with hidden microphones built into the temples of glasses, with the option to add prescription lenses.

EssilorLuxottica acquired Nuance Hearing and in February 2025 received FDA clearance for their OTC Nuance Hearing Glasses.

Nuance Audio calls it “a cutting-edge innovation for vision and hearing.”

They promote it as glasses with stylish designs to complement any look, while incorporating an invisible hearing solution.

It is not a new concept. At the beginning of the 19th century, an inventor added a hearing device into opera glasses, claiming it will create an immersive experience for users by amplifying voices and improving their view.

By 1950, Otarian Electronics developed the Otarian Listener. Its distinctive feature was that the electronics were embedded in the temple pieces. For people with mild or moderate hearing loss, this would be a stylish, single-device option – Gael Hannan (Hearing Health Advocate, Author, and TEDx Speaker)

First, let’s talk about glasses. People don’t only wear glasses to correct vision, but also to protect their eyes from sun damage. As such, it has become a fashion item. It makes wearing glasses normal without any association with an impairment. And unlike hearing devices, corrective glasses give us 100% eye sight.

So, what causes the stigma surrounding hearing loss?

1.1 Stigma Associated with Hearing Devices

The stigma surrounding hearing loss is the result of misconceptions such as:

Its association with age

Hearing loss can be a normal result of ageing, but many adults and even children can develop hearing loss due to noise exposure, ototoxic medicine, and even from various illnesses.

Its association with impaired intelligence

When you catch only parts of speech, it affects comprehension. Through beamforming they target specific sounds from the environment. The sounds are directed to the wearer’s ears through small speakers. The glasses rely on open-air conduction which can result in sound leakage and reduced clarity.

The hearing glasses connect to a smartphone app via Bluetooth to enable basic controls such as program and volume adjustments. The frame also has a multi-function button to adjust volume and turn the glasses off. The user uses a tap control to change the mode. It only allows for four pre-set programs and two audio modes.

This is a basic explanation, but what is beamforming? Is this the secret ingredient to their cutting edge innovation?

2.3 The Mechanics of Beamforming

Beamforming is used in hearing aids to focus on the direction of a targeted sound. People with hearing loss often struggle to distinguish between a speaker and background noise – with or without hearing aids.

Hearing aids with directional microphones use beamforming to focus on wanted versus unwanted sounds. It aims to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), by creating a hearing aid listening sensitivity pattern that responds to signals from the target sound (normally speech).

The microphones are omni-directional, and directionality is achieved through:

Physically shaping and positioning the microphones during the hardware development phase;

Electrically using analog delay circuits;

Mathematically using digital signal processing (DSP) during development.

For hearing aids, beamforming focuses on sound waves and involves multiple microphones, calle a microphone array.

Beamforming is a complex concept, but this explains the basics for the scope of this article. However, we can conclude that beamforming is not an unique feature in the Nuance hearing glasses.

2.4 Who Benefits from Nuance Hearing Glasses

Nuance developed their hearing glasses for people with mild to moderate hearing loss, or individuals that struggle to understand speech in noise.

Interestingly, Nuance also recommends their hearing glasses for normal hearing people that want to ease listening effort in a noisy environment or with multiple speakers. Microphones hidden in glasses help because it amplifies sounds from the direction the wearer is facing.

Besides functionality, Nuance also promotes their hearing glasses for people who value style and appearance, and prefer products that align with their taste and make them feel confident.

Now that we explored how Nuance hearing glasses work, and who they are for, let’s look if the hidden hearing technology in Nuance is a bridge to treatment, or only a shelter for stigma.

2.5 Invisible Technology: Bridge to Treatment Versus Shelter for Stigma

Hearing loss advocate, Anna Kirton sees Nuance as an entry-level way for people to accept their hearing loss and get treatment earlier, but she argues that keeping hearing loss hidden delays empowerment and self-advocacy.

Author and Audiologist Keith “Earman” Chittleborough sees the Nuance as “a viable entry point.” He says “Nuance is no more physically discreet than many hearing aids – they are in fact more visible than most – but it is psychologically different.”

What I find interesting in this quote is that Keith says: More visible than most…”. But we need to remember that what is visible, in this case, is the glasses. The hearing technology is still hidden.

According to Keith the psychology between hearing glasses and hearing aids are different. Hearing glasses are an option “without the burden of association given to the term hearing aid.”

But here is the concern: When they provide invisibility through their hearing glasses, do they remove a barrier for treatment, or contribute to the stigma around hearing loss?

3. The clinical perspective: The vital step of professional diagnosis before self-treating.

As an OTC product Nuance hearing glasses doesn’t require a formal hearing test, but you can use the Nuance online hearing test.

I did extensive research on hearing loss when writing Silent Courage: An Introvert’s Authentic Journey with Hearing Loss. Considering the intricacy of our hearing system, and the complexity of hearing loss, I believe that diagnostic hearing tests are crucial for proper treatment of hearing loss.

3.1 The Importance of Diagnostic Hearing Testing

A comprehensive audiology evaluation doesn’t only test your hearing ability, but also tests for possible balance issues. The audiologist can determine the location of your hearing loss. They also check if your hearing is at age appropriate levels, and determine its type, degree, and configuration. All this information is crucial to develop the best treatment plan. For example, a cochlear implant for profound hearing loss, hearing aids for mild to severe sensorineural hearing loss, or medical intervention for temporary conductive hearing loss.

Tympanometry checks the middle ear for blockages, which can often be treated with medicine or surgery.

Audiologists also test stapedial reflexes and reflex decay. It refers to the auditory nerve’s ability to send hearing signals to the brain. Blockages require medical intervention.

Auditory evoked potential or brainstem response evaluation measures electrical nerve impulses that carry sound from the ear to the brain. The audiologist determines how sound is transmitted to the brain and checks for blockages or interruptions to the nerve impulses.

The sentence-in-noise test is crucial to compare your performance during conversations in noisy environments with people with normal hearing. It helps your audiologist to select the right type of hearing aid for your specific hearing loss profile.

The otoacoustic emissions test determines the function of the outer hair cells in the inner ear. Otoacoustic emissions are acoustic signals generated by the inner ear – in absence of or in response to acoustic stimulation.

Our hearing system is very delicate and complex. Self-diagnostic tests give very simple and generic results. It also fails to account for incorrect user input. These tests cannot detect physical issues like blockages or deformities. Relying on these tests to customise OTC devices are very hit or miss. You’ll never get the optimal results you would have with a hearing device properly fitted by an audiologist.

4. But consider the long-term trade-offs:

Prescription hearing aids can last from 3 to 6 years, while prescription glasses need replacement every second year. With Nuance hearing glasses, it means you can’t just upgrade your prescription lenses, you need to buy a new Nuance frame as well.

Prescription hearing aids have high IP ratings to withstand sweat, earwax, and accidental moisture exposure, which the Nuance hearing glasses don’t have. Should they get damaged due to moisture, once again you are faced with replacing the complete combo.

Traditional hearing aids are modular units, which means the electronic components can be replaced and regular services can extend the lifespan of your device, which is not the case with Nuance.

Now, let’s look at a scenario covering a 6-year timeline.

Scenario 3: Cost Over a 6-Year Timeline
upgrading prescription lenses every 2 years

Nuance Hearing Glasses + Prescription Lenses Path

Hearing Aids & Separate Glasses Path

Nuance frames + prescription lenses x 3
$1,998 x 3

Once off hearing aids + (frame & prescription glasses) x3
$2124 + ($798 x 3)

Total: $5,994

Total: $4,518

Now we are looking at a $1476 difference in favour of separate devices. We see that separate devices have definite cost benefits over the long term, and in the case of hearing aids also offer durability, repairability, and ongoing customisation for optimal hearing.

Let the debate begin: Nuance hearing glasses versus hearing aids?

I’ll take hearing aids anytime. Although HearAdvisor gave a good rating for Nuance for speech in quiet and noisy environments, it doesn’t offer an all-round solution. It feels like something you’ll only use in certain situations.

The main marketing point of Nuance – hidden and discreet – is what concerns me most. Sure, it may encourage people to seek treatment for their hearing loss sooner, but keeps it invisible.

Since hearing loss is often progressive, what happens when hearing declines, and you don’t have the option of invisible hearing aids? You now know the benefits of hearing treatment, so it is not so easy to just say no. Effectively, the hearing glasses have just delayed something that you could have more easily come to terms earlier.

My main concern is still that keeping the focus on discreet hearing aids only contributes to the stigma surrounding hearing loss, and keeping hearing loss invisible.

Although the Nuance hearing glasses provide an option for people to seek hearing loss treatment earlier, it also has drawbacks like lack of Bluetooth and accessibility options, according to Lisa Seerup (President of Hearing New Zealand.)

Taking an online hearing test will never enable you to customise your Nuance hearing glasses (or any OTC hearing device) for optimal hearing.

It is crucial that you have a comprehensive audiological exam to determine the type and degree of your hearing loss. If the audiologist feels the Nuance is a viable option, they can recommend it. They can also help you to customise it according to your hearing test.

I would love to hear from you.
